Although there are many places where birds are a major annoyance, one of the most common of these is on the balcony. Most people try hard to keep their balcony or porch clean, and birds can make a mess of it almost faster than you can clean it! What can you do about it without going crazy? The truth is that there are some simple products that you can buy and install yourself that will in most cases solve your bird problems.
The most common and arguably most effective option is to get some bird spikes. These have pointy pieces of plastic or metal sticking out of them, and get glued onto your balcony railing. If you are looking for a really simple solution, this is probably it. All you need to do is use a tape measure and get an accurate idea of how long your railing is. With this measurement, you can order enough bird spikes to cover it.
There are a couple different types of bird spikes that are great for railings. Some are made of plastic, and others are made out of
stainless steel. While metal bird spikes are great for certain locations, sunlight does get reflected off of them, which is why many people choose not to use them in highly visible places like balconies. For this situation, you are most likely better off using plastic bird spikes. You might be thinking that plastic won't last very long and will look bad. The truth is that these days manufacturers are using very high quality materials to make their spikes, and they are built to last for over 5 years.
Plastic bird spikes are designed to be as invisible as possible, so you don't notice them every time you look outside. Once you have your bird spikes, the next step is to install them. Although most people choose to glue them down with bird spike adhesive, tying them onto the railing is an alternative as well. If you don't thing you will need to take them off, glue them down. On the other hand, if you think that you might need to remove them at some point, tying them down will save you the hassle of cleaning the sticky adhesive off the railing later on.
While bird spikes are great for evicting birds from railings, they really don't do anything to stop them from sitting on the balcony or porch floor itself. Some people have major problems with pigeons setting up home on their balcony floor, which quickly causes it to get filthy. If you are in this situation, you will most likely need to use something else to get the birds off. One thing to try is bird netting. While it doesn't exactly sound great to have a net covering you balcony or porch area, it will work to keep the birds out completely. These days you can get a bird deterrent net that is meant to be invisible, which makes all the difference in a place like a balcony where you want to enjoy the view outside.
